American Ingersoll Rand originates from two seperate companies, both founded in 1871. Ingersoll Rock Company by Simon Ingersoll and Rand Drill Company by brothers Addison Rand and Jasper Rand, Jr. 

The company has gone through many merges and changes over the years, and is now focused on operating in two segments:  Industrial Technologies and Services and Precision and Science Technologies.
